Field book

What to bring with you

A first meeting goes further when the paper is already on the table. Bring what you have; the attorney will tell you what else the matter needs.

  • After a crash or an injury

The police report number, photos of the scene and the damage, the names of witnesses, every medical bill and record, and any letter from an insurance company.

  • Divorce or custody

Your marriage certificate, recent tax returns and pay stubs, a list of what you own and owe together, and your children's school and activity schedule.

  • Debt, bankruptcy or a tax letter

A list of every creditor and balance, two years of tax returns, recent pay stubs, and the notice itself, whether from a collector, the IRS or the State of Maryland.

  • A will or an estate

A rough list of your assets and accounts, who you want to provide for, who you trust to act for you, and any will or deed you already have.
